Pancrelipase is a pharmaceutical preparation consisting of a mixture of digestive enzymes, primarily lipase, amylase, and protease, typically derived from porcine pancreatic glands. It is the standard of care for enzyme replacement therapy in patients with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), which occurs when the pancreas fails to secrete sufficient enzymes for digestion, often due to cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, or surgical removal of the pancreas. Pancrelipase works by catalyzing the breakdown of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins in the small intestine, thereby improving nutrient absorption and reducing symptoms such as steatorrhea and abdominal pain. Beyond its approved uses, pancrelipase has been investigated in clinical trials, such as those led by Dr. Mary E. Money, for the management of postprandial diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), where it may help regulate gastric emptying and intestinal motility following trigger meals.
