Overview

EUR-1066-B, known by the brand name Zenpep, is a porcine-derived pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) developed by Eurand (now part of Nestlé Health Science). It is indicated for the treatment of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) associated with cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, pancreatectomy, or other conditions. The drug consists of a standardized mixture of digestive enzymes, including lipases, proteases, and amylases, which catalyze the hydrolysis of fats into glycerol and fatty acids, proteins into peptides and amino acids, and starches into dextrins and short-chain sugars. EUR-1066-B specifically refers to the formulation of enteric-coated microspheres (Minitabs) contained within a capsule, designed to protect the enzymes from degradation by gastric acid and ensure their release in the alkaline environment of the duodenum, thereby facilitating nutrient absorption in patients with deficient endogenous pancreatic secretion.
