Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Panzytrat 25.000 FIP-E units of Lipase is a pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) containing 25,000 FIP-E (Fédération Internationale Pharmaceutique enzyme) units of lipase per capsule. Its active ingredient is pancrelipase (pancreatin) of porcine origin, which is a biologic mixture of digestive enzymes including lipase, amylase, and protease extracted from pig pancreas. The drug is indicated for the treatment of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) associated with conditions such as chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, pancreatectomy, and post-gastrointestinal bypass surgery. It works by supplementing deficient endogenous digestive enzymes in the gastrointestinal tract, facilitating the breakdown and absorption of dietary fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. Panzytrat was originally developed by Knoll, with subsequent development and marketing by Abbott, Axcan Pharma, Aptalis Pharma, Forest Laboratories, Actavis, Allergan, and AbbVie. It has been studied in clinical trials, including a Phase 4 trial sponsored by the Foundation for Liver Research comparing a patient self-dosage regimen to a fixed-dose regimen in patients with EPI due to chronic pancreatitis.
