Overview

Pancrelipase is a pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) consisting of a porcine-derived mixture of lipase, amylase, and protease. It is conventionally indicated for the treatment of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) associated with conditions such as cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, and pancreatectomy. Clinical research led by Dr. Mary E. Money has investigated the application of pancrelipase for managing postprandial diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D). The therapy works by supplementing endogenous enzymes to facilitate the hydrolysis of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates in the duodenum, which may mitigate symptoms like bloating, cramping, and fecal urgency in patients experiencing maldigestion or rapid intestinal transit (physiologic gastric dumping).
