The AS03-adjuvanted A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)v-like vaccine is a monovalent, inactivated, split-virion pandemic influenza vaccine developed by GSK. Marketed under the brand names Pandemrix (primarily in Europe) and Arepanrix (in North America), it was specifically developed to address the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic (swine flu). The vaccine contains 3.75 µg of haemagglutinin (HA) antigen derived from the A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)v-like strain (reassortant virus NYMC X-179A). A defining characteristic is the use of GSK's proprietary Adjuvant System AS03, an oil-in-water emulsion containing squalene, DL-α-tocopherol (Vitamin E), and polysorbate 80. This adjuvant enhances the immune response, enabling significant antigen dose-sparing. The vaccine is administered via intramuscular injection and works by stimulating the production of neutralizing antibodies against the viral haemagglutinin protein, thereby preventing viral attachment and entry into host cells.
