Paroxetine + benzodiazepine refers to the co-administration of paroxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), with any drug from the benzodiazepine class. Paroxetine acts primarily as a serotonin transporter inhibitor, thereby increasing synaptic serotonin levels to treat depression, anxiety disorders, and panic disorder. Benzodiazepines (such as alprazolam, diazepam, or clonazepam) are central nervous system depressants that act as positive allosteric modulators of the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) type A receptor, enhancing GABAergic inhibition to provide anxiolytic, sedative, and muscle relaxant effects. The combination is sometimes used clinically for rapid anxiety or panic relief, but carries a risk of additive CNS depression, including excess sedation, cognitive impairment, and, in cases of overdose, potentiation of toxicity and respiratory depression[1][2][3][4][5][7][8].
