Overview

A combination preparation consisting of partially hydrolyzed guar gum (PHGG) and sodium hyaluronate (hyaluronic acid) being investigated by IRCCS San Raffaele Roma for the treatment of chronic constipation, particularly in patients with Parkinson's disease. PHGG is a soluble fiber derived from the guar bean (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba) that acts as a prebiotic and bulk-forming agent to improve bowel regularity and stool consistency. Sodium hyaluronate is a high-molecular-weight polysaccharide that is thought to provide a protective and hydrating effect on the intestinal mucosa, potentially facilitating easier passage of stool. In a pilot clinical trial (NCT04569656), a 30 ml stick pack formulation containing 5g of PHGG and 200mg of sodium hyaluronate was found to be safe, well-tolerated, and effective in significantly improving constipation symptoms and quality of life in Parkinson's patients.
