Pathogen reduced plasma + cryoprecipitate reduced is a plasma-derived transfusion blood product consisting of cryoprecipitate-reduced plasma treated with the INTERCEPT pathogen reduction process developed by Cerus. The process uses amotosalen followed by UV-A illumination to intercalate into and photochemically inactivate nucleic acid-containing pathogens and residual donor lymphocytes, thereby lowering transfusion-transmitted infection risk while preserving most plasma proteins and coagulation activity. The product is depleted of fibrinogen, factor VIII, and von Willebrand factor, but retains other coagulation factors, anticoagulant proteins, ADAMTS13, and immunoglobulins. It is used as replacement plasma, particularly for therapeutic plasma exchange or transfusion in thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, where preservation of ADAMTS13 with reduced large von Willebrand factor content is clinically relevant.
