Drug intelligence / Profile preview
PCV20 + PPSV23 is a sequential vaccination regimen being evaluated for its ability to prevent pneumococcal infections in immunocompromised populations. The series consists of the Pneumococcal 20-valent Conjugate Vaccine (PCV20, Prevnar 20), which contains capsular polysaccharides from 20 serotypes of *Streptococcus pneumoniae* conjugated to a CRM197 carrier protein, followed by the Pneumococcal Polyvalent Vaccine (PPSV23, Pneumovax 23), which contains purified capsular polysaccharides from 23 serotypes. The conjugate vaccine is designed to induce a T-cell dependent immune response and mucosal immunity, while the polysaccharide vaccine provides broader coverage against additional serotypes via a T-cell independent mechanism. This specific series is currently in Phase II clinical trials (PROTECT CLL) sponsored by the University of Utah to assess its efficacy in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL).
