Overview

This is a combination therapy that pairs PD-1 immune checkpoint inhibitors with bevacizumab, an anti-VEGF monoclonal antibody. The combination leverages complementary mechanisms of action to enhance anti-tumor effects. PD-1 inhibitors (such as pembrolizumab, nivolumab, or atezolizumab) work by blocking the interaction between PD-1 and PD-L1, reinvigorating T cell immune responses against cancer cells. Bevacizumab works by binding to VEGF-A, inhibiting angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels) that tumors need for growth and metastasis. This dual approach targets both immune evasion and tumor vascularization pathways, potentially offering synergistic benefits in various cancer types. Clinical studies have investigated this combination for multiple cancer types, including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and cervical cancer, with varying degrees of success depending on cancer type and patient characteristics such as PD-L1 expression levels.
