peanut allergen extract (UNC Chapel Hill)

This is a peanut allergen extract developed by the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, for the treatment of peanut allergy via sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT). The extract, manufactured by Greer Laboratories, contains peanut protein at a concentration of 5000 μg/mL. It is administered as a liquid under the tongue to induce immune desensitization and potentially long-term clinical tolerance. Research at UNC has focused on children (ages 1-4 and older), demonstrating that maintenance doses of 2-4 mg of peanut protein can safely increase reaction thresholds and, in some cases, lead to sustained tolerance after treatment cessation.
