Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This is a combination therapy consisting of peginterferon (a pegylated form of interferon alfa), vitamin D (commonly cholecalciferol), and ribavirin. Peginterferon is an immunomodulatory cytokine that enhances the immune response against viral infections, particularly hepatitis C virus (HCV). Ribavirin is a nucleoside analog antiviral that inhibits viral RNA synthesis and replication. Vitamin D, a secosteroid hormone, has immunomodulatory effects and may influence treatment outcomes in HCV infection by modulating host immune responses. This combination has been studied primarily for chronic hepatitis C infection to assess whether vitamin D supplementation can enhance the efficacy of standard peginterferon/ribavirin therapy[1][3][5]. The addition of vitamin D has shown mixed results in clinical trials; some studies suggest improved virologic response rates in certain patient subgroups, while others do not show significant benefit[1][3][5].
