Overview
**Peginterferon alfa-2a + adefovir dipivoxil** is a combination therapy used primarily in the treatment of chronic hepatitis B, especially in patients who are HBeAg-positive. Peginterferon alfa-2a is a pegylated form of interferon alpha-2a, which acts as an immunomodulatory and antiviral agent by stimulating an immune response against hepatitis B virus (HBV) and directly inhibiting viral replication. Adefovir dipivoxil is a nucleotide analog reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NtRTI) that inhibits HBV DNA polymerase, thereby suppressing viral replication. The combination targets different mechanisms in HBV replication and can result in greater reductions in viral load and higher rates of ALT normalization compared to peginterferon alfa-2a monotherapy. The combination is generally well tolerated and does not introduce unexpected side effects compared to the individual drugs alone[1][3][4][5].
