Peginterferon alfa-2b + nucleos(t)ide analogues is a combination therapy being investigated by Shenzhen Third People's Hospital for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B (CHB). Peginterferon alfa-2b is a pegylated cytokine that binds to the interferon alpha/beta receptor (IFNAR), triggering a signaling cascade that induces an antiviral state and enhances the host immune response against the hepatitis B virus. Nucleos(t)ide analogues (NAs), such as entecavir or tenofovir, are small molecule inhibitors of the HBV DNA polymerase/reverse transcriptase, which directly suppress viral replication by acting as chain terminators. This combination regimen is specifically being studied in a prospective cohort to evaluate its ability to achieve HBsAg clearance (functional cure) in CHB patients, including those with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).
