Drug intelligence / Profile preview
"peginterferon alfa-2b + probiotics" is an investigational combination therapy primarily studied for the treatment of chronic viral hepatitis, such as Hepatitis C and B. This regimen combines peginterferon alfa-2b, an immunomodulatory protein, with probiotics, which are live beneficial microorganisms. Peginterferon alfa-2b works by simulating the body's natural antiviral response. The rationale for adding probiotics, such as strains of *Lactobacillus* and *Bifidobacterium*, is to modulate the gut microbiome. Research suggests this modulation can positively influence the gut-liver axis, potentially enhancing the host's immune response against the virus and improving the efficacy of the interferon treatment. [18, 25] Studies have shown that this combination can enhance patient responses to therapy, as indicated by a reduction in viral load. [18]
