Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Peginterferon alfa-2b + tenofovir disoproxil fumarate** is a combination regimen that merges a pegylated recombinant human type I interferon (peginterferon alfa-2b) with a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor prodrug (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate). Peginterferon alfa-2b acts as an immunomodulator and direct antiviral by binding to type I interferon receptors, activating the JAK/STAT pathway, and upregulating antiviral and antiproliferative responses. Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, a prodrug of tenofovir, introduces an acyclic nucleotide analog into viral DNA, resulting in premature chain termination and inhibition of viral replication. The combination is under investigation and use for the management of chronic hepatitis B, particularly in patients who are treatment-naïve or previously treated with nucleoside analogs.
