Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This is a **combination therapy** consisting of **peginterferon lambda-1a**, **ribavirin**, and **telaprevir**. Peginterferon lambda-1a is a type III interferon that exerts antiviral activity primarily in hepatocytes and was developed as a potentially safer alternative to type I interferons. Ribavirin is a nucleoside analog with broad antiviral activity. Telaprevir is an oral NS3/4A serine protease inhibitor that blocks HCV replication. The regimen was developed for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 infection and has undergone phase 3 clinical testing. Compared to the traditional alfa interferon-based regimens, the lambda-based combination was designed with the intent to minimize hematological side effects while maintaining efficacy. This therapy was primarily evaluated in treatment-naïve adults or those who had relapsed on interferon-based regimens. The combination was not shown to be non-inferior to peginterferon alfa-2a/ribavirin/telaprevir and development does not appear to have proceeded to approval[5][6][7].
