Overview

Pegylated zinc(II) phthalocyanine 1b (ZnPc 1b) is a research-stage small molecule photosensitizer designed for use in photodynamic therapy (PDT). It consists of a zinc(II) phthalocyanine core substituted with polyethylene glycol (PEG) chains to improve water solubility and biocompatibility. Upon irradiation with specific wavelengths of light, the molecule generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), primarily singlet oxygen, which induces cytotoxicity in targeted cancer cells. In vitro studies have demonstrated its phototoxic effects against various cancer cell lines, including colorectal adenocarcinoma (HT29), hepatocarcinoma (HepG2), and head and neck cancer (A253, FaDu). It is currently utilized as a laboratory tool in academic research and as a precursor for more complex functionalized derivatives.
