Overview

This is a combination of four antibiotics and antibiotic adjuncts: - **Penicillin** is a beta-lactam antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to cell lysis and death. - **Ampicillin** is an aminopenicillin, also a beta-lactam antibiotic, with activity against both Gram-positive and some Gram-negative bacteria. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. - **Sulbactam** is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that protects beta-lactam antibiotics (like ampicillin) from degradation by bacterial enzymes called beta-lactamases. Sulbactam itself has limited antibacterial activity but enhances the efficacy of companion antibiotics[5][6][7]. - **Cefuroxime** is a second-generation cephalosporin (beta-lactam) antibiotic with broad-spectrum activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It resists many common beta-lactamases[8]. The combination would theoretically provide very broad coverage for various bacterial infections, including those caused by organisms producing beta-lactamase enzymes. However, there are no known approved or marketed products containing all four agents together; combinations such as ampicillin/sulbactam or cefuroxime alone are used in clinical practice[2][3][4]. The mechanism of action for each component involves inhibition of bacterial cell wall synthesis (for penicillins/cephalosporins), while sulbactam acts as an enzyme inhibitor.
