Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This is a combination of two antibiotics: penicillin (a beta-lactam antibiotic) and cefuroxime (a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic). Both medications work by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Penicillin binds to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in bacterial cell walls, while cefuroxime similarly binds to PBPs but has a different spectrum of activity. Cefuroxime is effective against many gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including beta-lactamase-producing strains. This combination is not a standard fixed-dose combination product but may be prescribed together in certain clinical situations requiring broad antimicrobial coverage.
