Penicillin v + metronidazole is a combination of two antibiotics used primarily in the treatment of severe dental and oral infections, particularly those with both aerobic and anaerobic bacterial involvement. Penicillin V (phenoxymethylpenicillin) is a narrow-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, mainly targeting Gram-positive organisms. Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic effective against anaerobic bacteria and certain protozoa; it works by damaging microbial DNA. The combination is often prescribed for acute dento-alveolar infections (dental abscesses) when broader coverage for both aerobic and anaerobic pathogens is required or when infection severity warrants dual therapy[7][9][3]. This regimen may be considered as an alternative to amoxicillin plus metronidazole, especially where use of narrower spectrum agents like penicillin V is preferred[3].
