Overview

Penn Microbiome Therapy (PMT) refers to a suite of investigational fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) products developed by the University of Pennsylvania for the treatment of severe or fulminant Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI). The PMT product line includes PMT-001 (enema), PMT-002 (suspension), and PMT-003 (oral capsules), all of which are manufactured from screened human donor stool using standardized protocols. The therapy is designed to restore a healthy and diverse gut microbiome, which is typically depleted in patients with recurrent or severe CDI. By reintroducing a complex community of beneficial bacteria, PMT aims to provide competitive inhibition against C. difficile and restore the intestinal environment's natural resistance to pathogen overgrowth. In clinical settings, PMT is evaluated as an adjunctive treatment administered alongside standard-of-care antibiotics to prevent recurrence and improve clinical outcomes in high-risk patients.
