Overview

penta-1,2,3,4,6-O-galloyl-beta-D-glucose (also known as pentagalloylglucose or PGG) is a naturally occurring hydrolyzable gallotannin polyphenol compound with diverse biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-tumor properties. In clinical development, it is being investigated as a localized endovascular therapy (using the Nectero EAST System) to stabilize and slow the growth of small- to medium-sized abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). PGG works by binding with high affinity to extracellular matrix proteins, specifically elastin and collagen, in the aortic wall. This binding reinforces the structural integrity of the vessel, sterically hinders enzymatic degradation by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), and reduces the risk of aneurysm expansion and rupture.
