pentane-1,5-diol

Pentane-1,5-diol is a small molecule aliphatic diol developed by Ambria Dermatology as a topical hydrogel formulation for the treatment of impetigo. It functions as a direct antimicrobial agent with activity against both sensitive and multi-resistant aerobic bacteria, demonstrating minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) between 5% and 12.5%. While its exact mechanism of action is not fully understood, it is hypothesized to inhibit bacterial growth by withdrawing water from bacterial cells. In addition to its therapeutic properties, pentane-1,5-diol acts as a percutaneous absorption enhancer and a preservative in topical formulations. It is characterized by low toxicity, low risk of skin and eye irritation, and a lack of odor.
