Overview

A combination therapy consisting of intralesional pentoxifylline and autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) investigated for the treatment of atrophic acne scars. Pentoxifylline is a methylxanthine derivative that functions as a nonselective phosphodiesterase inhibitor, enhancing microcirculation and exerting anti-fibrotic effects by modulating cytokine activity and reducing collagen production in certain contexts, while promoting healthy tissue remodeling. Platelet-rich plasma is a concentrated autologous biologic containing various growth factors, including PDGF, TGF-beta, and VEGF, which promote tissue remodeling, angiogenesis, and collagen synthesis. This combination is designed to synergistically improve the appearance of icepick, boxcar, and rolling acne scars by stimulating the skin's natural healing and regenerative processes. The therapy is being evaluated in clinical trials sponsored by Sohag University.
