Overview

A combination of pentoxifylline and sulfasalazine used as adjuvant therapy in autoimmune conditions, particularly pemphigus vulgaris. Both drugs work synergistically to reduce tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) levels through independent mechanisms. Pentoxifylline reduces TNF-α production by inhibiting phosphodiesterase, while sulfasalazine inhibits TNF-α messenger RNA levels and binds to circulating TNF-α. This low-cost combination offers an alternative to more expensive biologic TNF-α inhibitors and traditional immunosuppressants with fewer side effects.
