Perfluoropropane + oxygen mixture is an inhaled diagnostic contrast agent developed by Hal C. Charles at Duke University for use in 19F Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The mixture utilizes thermally polarized perfluoropropane (C3F8), an inert perfluorinated gas, combined with oxygen to provide a detectable fluorine signal for imaging the lung's airway spaces. This technique allows for the non-invasive evaluation of regional lung function, ventilation efficiency, and gas wash-in/wash-out kinetics. It is primarily investigated for monitoring lung transplant recipients to detect early signs of chronic lung allograft rejection (CLAD) by identifying regional ventilation defects without the need for complex hyperpolarization equipment.
