Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Definity (perflutren lipid microsphere) is an ultrasound contrast agent (microbubble agent) developed by ImaRx and marketed by Lantheus. It consists of lipid microspheres encapsulating perflutren, a perfluorocarbon gas. When administered intravenously, these microbubbles enhance the echogenicity of blood, improving the visualization of vascular structures and tissue perfusion during ultrasound imaging. Definity is FDA-approved as an echocardiographic contrast agent for cardiac imaging (left ventricular opacification and endocardial border delineation) in both adult and pediatric patients. It has also been investigated for other diagnostic applications, including the characterization of thyroid nodules using contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS).
