Overview

This is a pharmaceutical combination used experimentally for **sonothrombolysis in acute ischemic stroke**. It consists of **perflutren lipid microspheres**, which are ultrasound contrast agents comprised of gas-filled lipid microspheres, and **tissue plasminogen activator (tPA)**, a recombinant enzyme used for thrombolysis. In clinical trials, **perflutren lipid microspheres are administered intravenously along with tPA** and activated by transcranial ultrasound to promote enhanced clot dissolution compared to tPA alone. The microspheres facilitate energy transfer from ultrasound waves directly to thrombus sites, stimulating local recanalization by improving delivery and mechanical disruption. The primary indication for this combination in trials is **augmentation of thrombolysis for acute ischemic stroke**. Development and clinical studies have been conducted by ImaRx Therapeutics.
