Drug intelligence / Profile preview
PeriCord is an advanced therapy medicinal product (ATMP) consisting of a porcine-derived type I collagen membrane (Viscofan Collagen Membrane) seeded with allogeneic adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADSCs). Developed by Viscofan in collaboration with the Germans Trias i Pujol Health Science Research Institute (IGTP) and the Banc de Sang i Teixits (BST), it is designed for surgical application to the epicardium of patients with chronic ischaemic heart failure. The collagen membrane serves as a bioactive scaffold that ensures the localized retention and survival of the stem cells at the site of myocardial injury. Once implanted, the ADSCs exert therapeutic effects primarily through paracrine signaling, releasing factors that promote angiogenesis, modulate the local immune response, and reduce myocardial fibrosis, with the ultimate goal of improving cardiac function and promoting tissue regeneration.
