Overview
A personalized phage cocktail is a therapeutic approach that uses a combination of specific bacteriophages (viruses that infect and kill bacteria) tailored to target the particular bacterial strain causing a patient's infection. This strategy is being developed as an alternative or adjunct to traditional antibiotics, especially for treating infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria. [4, 5, 16] The process involves isolating the pathogenic bacteria from a patient, screening a library of phages to find those that are lytically active against the pathogen, and then combining the most effective phages into a 'cocktail' for administration. [11] This personalization aims to ensure high efficacy against the specific infection while minimizing harm to the body's beneficial microbiota. [14, 15] A clinical trial (NCT07382271) is evaluating a personalized phage cocktail developed by Chuangshiji (Shanghai) Biotechnology Co., Ltd. for treating drug-resistant urinary tract infections (UTIs).
