Overview

A combination of **Peumus boldus** (boldo) and **Spiraea ulmaria** (meadowsweet) plant extracts has been investigated primarily as a topical or oral herbal therapy, particularly for the prevention and treatment of microbial skin infections and for supportive care in inflammatory skin conditions, especially in animals. Both plants have long-standing traditional medical use: boldo as a mild sedative, choleretic, diuretic, and antimicrobial agent; meadowsweet as an anti-inflammatory, mild analgesic, antipyretic (due to salicylates), and diuretic. The combination is reported to inhibit the growth of bacteria such as *Staphylococcus aureus* and *Propionibacterium acnes* without inducing a pro-inflammatory cytokine response. In controlled studies in atopic dogs, this combination reduced bacterial colonization but did not significantly alter clinical scores of dermatitis or antimicrobial peptide secretion. The mechanism of action is believed to involve antimicrobial activity, inhibition of inflammatory processes, and potential mild analgesic effects without exacerbating inflammation[1][2][6].
