PhageBank + antibiotics is a combination therapy consisting of PhageBank—a bank or library of highly characterized bacteriophage strains produced for clinical therapy—and one or more standard antibiotics. This combination is designed to treat multidrug-resistant bacterial infections by exploiting the synergistic actions of bacteriophages, which infect and lyse specific bacterial pathogens, and antibiotics, which inhibit bacterial growth or viability through established mechanisms such as inhibition of cell wall or protein/DNA synthesis. The combination aims to enhance bacterial clearance (synergy), reduce the emergence of resistance to either agent, enable lower antibiotic dosing, and improve efficacy against biofilm-associated infections. Mechanistically, the partners act on different bacterial targets: phages lyse bacteria through infection and lytic replication, whereas antibiotics act by inhibiting cell wall biosynthesis, DNA synthesis, or other key bacterial processes. The precise phages and antibiotics utilized are chosen based on the infecting bacterial strain and its resistance profile. PhageBank is developed and provided by Adaptive Phage Therapeutics, and is not a single static product but a personalized, banked collection matched to the infection.
