Overview

Otalgan Ohrentropfen is a topical otic solution developed by Südmedica for the symptomatic treatment of ear pain. It is a combination product containing phenazone, a pyrazolone derivative with analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, and procaine hydrochloride, an ester-type local anesthetic. Phenazone acts as a non-selective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, thereby reducing the synthesis of prostaglandins involved in pain and inflammation. Procaine hydrochloride provides rapid local anesthesia by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels, which inhibits the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses in the ear canal and tympanic membrane. The product is primarily indicated for ear pain associated with conditions such as acute otitis media (with an intact eardrum) and external otitis. It is widely available as an over-the-counter (OTC) medication in Germany.
