Overview

Phenol in almond oil is a sclerosing agent used for the non-surgical treatment of internal hemorrhoids, specifically second-degree cases. The formulation typically contains 5% phenol, which acts as a chemical irritant. When injected into the submucosal layer at the base of the hemorrhoid (the pedicle), phenol causes protein denaturation and local tissue destruction, triggering an inflammatory response. This process results in fibrosis (scarring) that occludes the small blood vessels and anchors the mucosa to the underlying muscle, effectively shrinking the hemorrhoidal tissue and preventing further prolapse or bleeding. In the study conducted at Gulab Devi Hospital, this treatment was compared against rubber band ligation to evaluate its efficacy and safety profile in adult patients.
