Overview

Phentermine + amphetamine refers to the concurrent use of two central nervous system stimulants, phentermine and amphetamine. Both are sympathomimetic amines that act as stimulants, increasing the release of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain. Phentermine is primarily used as a short-term adjunct for weight loss in obesity management, while amphetamines (including dextroamphetamine/amphetamine combinations like Adderall) are mainly prescribed for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. The combination is not an approved pharmaceutical product but may be encountered when both drugs are prescribed together off-label. Both agents increase heart rate and blood pressure, so their combined use can enhance cardiovascular risks such as hypertension and tachycardia[1][4][5]. Mechanistically, both drugs stimulate the central nervous system by promoting catecholamine release.
