Drug intelligence / Profile preview
A combination therapy consisting of phenylephrine, an alpha-1 adrenergic receptor agonist that causes vasoconstriction, and nitric oxide, a selective vasodilator. This combination has been studied for its complementary effects in improving oxygenation in patients with adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). In phenylephrine-responsive patients, the combination produces greater improvement in oxygenation than either treatment alone, likely through selective enhancement of hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction by phenylephrine complementing the selective vasodilation by nitric oxide.
