Overview

Phocaeicola dorei + Phocaeicola vulgatus is a live microbial combination of two closely related gram-negative anaerobic bacteria that are natural, abundant constituents of the human gut microbiome[4][7]. Both species, formerly classified in the Bacteroides genus, have been investigated for potential probiotic and disease-modifying properties. In preclinical and clinical studies, co-administration of live P. dorei and P. vulgatus suppressed the development of atherosclerosis in mouse models, with effects linked to modulation of gut immunity and the reduction of inflammatory gene expression in vascular lesions[1][8][10]. These bacteria decrease gut microbial lipopolysaccharide levels, thereby reducing systemic inflammation, and may help prevent or treat atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease[8]. Mechanistic studies also show that P. vulgatus produces bioactive molecules such as alpha-galactosylceramide, which can activate invariant NKT cells and modulate cell-mediated immune responses relevant to cancer and cardiovascular disease[3]. Both species are under investigation as probiotics or biotherapeutic agents in chronic inflammatory diseases.
