**Phosphatidylcholine + deoxycholate** is an injectable phospholipid-and-bile-salt combination used experimentally for injection lipolysis and cosmetic reduction of localized subcutaneous fat. Deoxycholate acts principally as a detergent that disrupts adipocyte plasma membranes, causing adipocytolysis/necrosis and a local inflammatory macrophage response; phosphatidylcholine is used to form a soluble mixed-micelle preparation and may moderate local tissue effects. Small clinical studies reported localized reductions in abdominal subcutaneous-fat thickness, but formulations and concentrations vary substantially. In the United States, phosphatidylcholine/deoxycholate fat-dissolving injections are not FDA approved; the FDA warns that unapproved products can cause serious adverse reactions including scarring, infection, deformity, cysts, and painful nodules.
