Overview

Phosphoric acid + aluminium oxide is a prototype micro-abrasive dental paste developed by researchers at Misr University for Science and Technology. It is specifically designed for dental microabrasion to treat intrinsic enamel stains, such as those caused by mild to moderate dental fluorosis. The formulation consists of a 37% concentration of phosphoric acid combined with 50 µm alpha aluminum oxide (α-Al₂O₃) particles. The mechanism of action involves a dual approach: the phosphoric acid chemically dissolves the superficial layer of the stained enamel, while the aluminum oxide particles provide mechanical abrasion to remove the discolored tissue when applied with a rotating rubber cup. It has been studied in clinical trials as an alternative to commercial microabrasion agents like Antivet and Opalustre.
