Overview

Phosphorylated cyclocarya paliurus polysaccharide (low ds) is a structurally modified natural polysaccharide derived from the leaves of *Cyclocarya paliurus*, a plant commonly known as the sweet tea tree. This specific variant is characterized by a low degree of substitution (ds) of phosphate groups. In preclinical research, particularly in murine models of dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis, it has demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory and gut-regulatory activities. Its mechanism of action involves the preservation of the intestinal barrier by upregulating the expression of mucus barrier proteins such as MUC-2 and tight junction proteins like occludin and claudin-1. Furthermore, it suppresses pro-inflammatory signaling through the inhibition of the NF-κB pathway and the NLRP3 inflammasome, leading to reduced production of cytokines like TNF-α and IL-6. It also positively modulates the gut microbiota composition, increasing microbial diversity and the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs).
