physioneal (Baxter International Inc.)

Fixioneal (a regional brand name or common misspelling of Physioneal) is a peritoneal dialysis (PD) solution used for the treatment of patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). It is a bicarbonate/lactate-buffered solution containing glucose as an osmotic agent, along with essential electrolytes including sodium, calcium, magnesium, and chloride. Developed by Baxter, it is designed for use in Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) or Automated Peritoneal Dialysis (APD). The solution is formulated to be more biocompatible than traditional acidic, glucose-based PD solutions by maintaining a physiological pH (approximately 7.4) and reducing the formation of glucose degradation products (GDPs), which helps preserve the peritoneal membrane's function over long-term therapy. It is typically available in different buffer strengths, such as 35 mmol/L or 40 mmol/L, to tailor treatment to the patient's acid-base status.
