Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Equiton is a fixed-dose combination ophthalmic solution containing the miotic cholinergic agonist pilocarpine hydrochloride and the non-selective beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist timolol maleate. Developed by Bruschettini, it is approved for the treatment of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with ocular hypertension, open-angle glaucoma, or narrow-angle glaucoma. Pilocarpine acts as an agonist at muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (primarily M3), causing contraction of the iris sphincter and ciliary muscles to facilitate the drainage of aqueous humor through the trabecular meshwork. Timolol blocks beta-1 and beta-2 adrenergic receptors in the ciliary body, thereby reducing the production of aqueous humor. Together, these two active ingredients provide a synergistic reduction in intraocular pressure with a convenient twice-daily dosing regimen.
