pindolol + hydrochlorothiazide

Pindolol + hydrochlorothiazide is an oral fixed-dose combination antihypertensive that pairs the nonselective beta-adrenergic receptor blocker pindolol with the thiazide diuretic hydrochlorothiazide to treat high blood pressure in patients who require both components at specific doses. Pindolol lowers blood pressure primarily by competitively blocking β1- and β2-adrenergic receptors, reducing the effects of catecholamines on the heart and vasculature and thereby decreasing cardiac workload, while its intrinsic sympathomimetic (partial agonist) activity tends to blunt excessive bradycardia and negative inotropy.[1][2][6][8] Hydrochlorothiazide promotes natriuresis and diuresis by inhibiting sodium and chloride reabsorption in the distal convoluted tubule, reducing plasma volume and peripheral vascular resistance, which further lowers blood pressure.[1][3][8] The combination is used for maintenance therapy of hypertension when blood pressure is inadequately controlled by either agent alone and allows simplified dosing compared with separate tablets.[1][3][8][10]
