Overview

Pine needle oil (Pinus mugo), also known as dwarf pine needle oil, is a natural essential oil obtained from the needles of the *Pinus mugo* tree through steam distillation. It is a complex mixture of terpenes and sesquiterpenes, including α-pinene, β-pinene, and limonene. Historically marketed in the United States since 1921, it is primarily utilized in aromatherapy, as a fragrance component, and for its antimicrobial properties in disinfectants and sanitizers. While traditionally used in folk medicine for respiratory conditions like cough and for topical pain relief, there is limited clinical evidence to support these therapeutic claims. It is generally classified as a natural product extract rather than a modern targeted pharmaceutical.
