Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Pioglitazone + atorvastatin is a combination of two small molecule drugs used together, primarily in research and clinical practice, to address both dyslipidemia and insulin resistance. Pioglitazone is a thiazolidinedione antihyperglycemic agent that acts as an agonist at the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ), improving insulin sensitivity and glycemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus[1][4][5]. Atorvastatin is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin) that lowers cholesterol levels by inhibiting the rate-limiting step in cholesterol biosynthesis, thereby reducing low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and overall cardiovascular risk[8]. The combination has been studied for its potential additive effects on lipid profiles, inflammation reduction, and improvement of insulin resistance in patients with or without diabetes who have cardiovascular disease[2].
