Overview
Metact is a fixed-dose combination tablet containing pioglitazone and metformin, developed by Takeda Pharmaceutical Company for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Pioglitazone is a thiazolidinedione that improves insulin sensitivity by acting as a selective agonist for the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPAR-gamma). Metformin is a biguanide that primarily reduces hepatic glucose production and increases peripheral glucose uptake. The combination is used in Japan to improve glycemic control in patients who do not achieve adequate results with pioglitazone or metformin monotherapy. By combining these two agents with complementary mechanisms of action, Metact aims to improve glycemic control in patients for whom monotherapy is considered appropriate.
