Piperacillin + sulbactam

Piperacillin + sulbactam is a combination antibiotic consisting of piperacillin, a broad-spectrum ureidopenicillin beta-lactam antibiotic, and sulbactam, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Piperacillin acts by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in bacterial cell walls, inhibiting the final stage of peptidoglycan synthesis and leading to cell lysis. Sulbactam inhibits certain beta-lactamases produced by bacteria that would otherwise degrade piperacillin, thereby extending its antibacterial spectrum to include organisms that produce these enzymes. This combination is primarily used for the treatment of moderate-to-severe infections caused by susceptible Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including those resistant to other penicillins due to beta-lactamase production.
