piperacillin + tazobactam (Italmed)

Gelcide is a locally delivered subgingival antibiotic gel formulation containing a combination of the broad-spectrum ureidopenicillin antibiotic piperacillin and the beta-lactamase inhibitor tazobactam. Developed by Italmed in collaboration with MedTechDental and investigated in clinical trials sponsored by MegaGen Dental Implant Romania, Gelcide is designed as an adjunct to non-surgical mechanical debridement (scaling and root planing) for the treatment of stage III–IV periodontitis and peri-implantitis in adults. The product is supplied as a kit containing a powder of piperacillin and tazobactam and a liquid hydroalcoholic solution, which are mixed immediately before application. Once applied subgingivally into the periodontal pocket, the mixture transitions into a bioadhesive gel that seals the pocket, protecting it from bacterial recolonization and gradually releasing the active antimicrobials over 8 to 10 days to target periodontal pathogens.
