Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Piperacillin-tazobactam is a combination antibiotic consisting of piperacillin, an extended-spectrum ureidopenicillin, and tazobactam, a penicillanic acid sulfone beta-lactamase inhibitor. Piperacillin exerts its bactericidal activity by binding to and inhibiting penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are essential for bacterial cell wall synthesis. Tazobactam expands piperacillin's spectrum of activity by irreversibly inhibiting many beta-lactamases that would otherwise degrade piperacillin. This combination is effective against a broad range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, including *Pseudomonas aeruginosa*. It is administered intravenously for the treatment of moderate to severe infections such as nosocomial pneumonia, intra-abdominal infections, and skin and soft tissue infections. Thrift Pharmaceuticals provides this combination as a generic formulation.
